What is Reiki?
The word "Reiki"(pronounced Ray Key) is a Japanese kanji, representing two kanji in one. Kanji are symbols or graphic characters used to represent a thing, concept or word. Kanji originate in China and are based on drawings. "Rei" is the upper character and "Ki" is the lower character.
"Rei" is Japanese for spiritual, sacred, "Holy Spirit" or "Higher Power/Intelligence". "Rei" is the Higher Intelligence that oversees the creation of everything in the Universe. "Rei" is a gentle wisdom that passes through everything, from the creation of Universes to the development of your life. "Rei" provides guidance and assistance on all levels of life. "Rei" has also been called "God" and depending on your culture, can be associated with many different names.
"Ki" is Japanese for unseen energy or “Life-force Energy”. "Ki" is also known as "Prana", "Qi" or "Chi". "Ki" is the non-physical energy force that moves and flows through everything that is alive. When your “Ki” is high, you will feel healthy, self-confident and take pleasure in life. When “Ki” is low, you many feel sluggish, tired, drained or exhausted. When we breath, eat, sleep and absorb sunlight, we are receiving “Ki”. Certain breathing techniques and meditations help us to channel more “Ki” in and out of our bodies. When we die, our “Ki” leaves our physical body.
Reiki translates as Spiritually Guided Life-Force Energy. It is a natural and safe energy healing technique that promotes stress reduction, relaxation, the ability for our body to naturally heal itself.
It is said that Reiki was rediscovered by Mikao Usiu in March 1922. Since its rediscovery , it has been passed from Reiki Master to student. Energy healing techniques, like Reiki, have been practiced since the beginning of time.
